Ask HN: How to switch from SE to consulting on process and quality improvement?

I've been writing software for over 10 years now, and I'm 11 months into a break from work.

I've worked at several startups and larger companies (in Canada and Europe), burnt out a few times, and always noticed how much waste and suffering most organizations create.

This is usually because of a poor process, poor code quality, misaligned incentives, misunderstanding between functions... It's a long list. But the result is always large amounts of waste (time, energy) and suffering (stress, burnout).

I'd like to fix this. I think I'd be happier helping teams and companies improve on these things so that the product is better AND costs less to make while also improving overall working conditions.

I don't believe in Agile(tm) or SAFe. I hated these silly little games and "ceremonies" that wasted so much valuable time while achieving nothing; so I don't think becoming a Scrum Master(tm) is for me. I'd also like to put my technical knowledge to use, but I don't want to be writing software anymore.

I'm still figuring out what that role/service is called or which companies would be interested in it. I suspect most place aren't looking to fix the status quo.

Is anyone working in this space? How did you get started, what kind of companies do you work with? And how is this role called?

I am currently working for a company which practices „Self Managed Organization“. No management, there are hierarchies, but people define their own roles. Haven‘t been more fulfilled at work ever.

Research SMOs (Self Managed Organztions), there is a large network out there of books, organzations which help implement it etc. Plenty of room to consult and implement.

    A good starter: https://www.reinventingorganizations.com/

That sounds interesting. How did you go about finding SMOs where you could work?
