"Although Goldwater liked to believe his associations with Greenbaum and Bioff wouldn’t have an impact on his presidential dreams, he was wrong. The connection would dog Goldwater to his obituary in 1998."

Goldwater lost in a landslide in 1964, mostly because he was running against the heir to a very popular president and because the old New Deal coalition was not dead, partly because the media depicted him as dangerous. I doubt he lost any votes at all over ties to mobsters.

Despite Hollywood portraying the mob as predominantly Italian, virtually the entire cast of this sordid story have Jewish names.

I'm confused as to the implication of your comment. Is it peak or rock-bottom internet to get to what appears to be some form of antisemitism in the first comment?

Why is my comment 'anti semitism'? The mob is usually portrayed as Italian, while most of these names have Jewish origin. It wouldn't be anti Catholic to note that most Italian mob figures have Italian surnames. I'm not deriding the spiritual beliefs of these gangsters, just noting their origins. It's common knowledge that the current generation of 'Red Mafia' are predominantly Russian Jews. https://www.amazon.com/Red-Mafiya-Russian-Invaded-America/dp...

It's problematic because the article isn't about their ethnicity, and your comment boils down to "hey guys just so you know, they're Jews." Who cares? Unless you're going to tie that back to the story somehow, what's the point of bringing it up? It's not explicitly antisemitic but it is a weird thing to highlight.

the 'weird thing to highlight' is that your average Joe thinks of that era of mobster as Italian...

I think perhaps we are in a sad state of affairs when the mere mention of Jews elicits an accusation of antisemitism.

I'm a big fan of free speech and the US fourth amendment. The idea that we shouldn't discuss ethnic backgrounds and dogmatic religious beliefs doesn't sit well with me.

I think it's a natural consequence of having the front page being made up of a bunch of general interest stories that aren't strictly tech related.
